A Model for Synchronous Subthalamopallidal Oscillations

Based on re ent experimental data, we have developed a ondu tan e-based omputational network model of the subthalami nu leus and the external segment of the globus pallidus in the indire t pathway of the basal ganglia. Computer simulations and analysis of this model illuminate the roles of the network's oupling ar hite ture, and asso iated synapti ondu tan es, in modulating the a tivity patterns displayed by this network. Depending on the relationships of these oupling parameters, the network an support three general lasses of sustained ring patterns: lustering, propagating waves and repetitive spiking, whi h may show little regularity or orrelation. Ea h a tivity pattern an o ur ontinuously or in dis rete episodes. We hara terize the me hanisms underlying these rhythms, as well as the in uen e of parameters on details su h as spiking frequen y and wave speed. These results may have impli ations for indire t pathway a tivity in various experimental and pathologi al states.
